Good morning friend.

I am so happy you’re here! I hope this love note finds you cozy, comfortable and with a coffee in your hand.

I have been thinking of all the cozy season things I want to make, like soup with fresh sourdough bread and especially, baked treats…and yet I struggled to bring myself to start even one of them because it’s been so hot here. As soon as I even thought about turning the oven on, I lost all motivation. I kept telling myself soon it will change, the hot weather will break and we can begin…

Sunrise cresting the wave of clouds

It’s had me thinking a lot about patience…a virtue. One not easily earned. It was one of the BIGGEST lessons I was learning during my time in Culinary school. It wasn’t really in the curriculum but rather one of those unspoken lessons. Cooking, in any respect requires a fair bit of patience. You can try to rush your dish, but you risk undesirable results like burning the outside and undercooking the inside, or curdling, and in some cases breaking the sauce you spent so long making. Once you have done your prep you are kind of at the whim of chemistry doing it’s thing.

In the same way, though I want the season to change, desperately, I am at the whim of nature. And this lesson has translated across many aspects of my life, not just weather or cooking. I can do my part and prepare what I can and be ready when the time comes to put the dish in the oven, but I still need to wait for it the oven to preheat and the cook time MUST pass too.

So even though I want to be living my best feral life in the wilds of the desert, I still have some preparation to do here by the ocean. I mean, I’m not complaining, it’s a gorgeous life here that I still love to experience each day I get to be here. I AM look forward to the next chapter too.

And the moment I relented to Mother nature, the warm weather broke! We are on a tropical storm watch here as you read this, thanks to Hurricane Rachel. So I finally got my butt into my kitchen to make this five ingredient Caramel Sauce. It’s so simple, but definitely a recipe that takes a little extra patience! And it makes an amazing latte!

I hope wherever you are this Sunday, you can take a moment for yourself and do something that brings you joy. Thank you for joining me on this winding journey and I can’t wait to meet you back here…

Same time next week.
